Save Sheringham’s Historic Brick Bus Shelter
The historic brick bus shelter in Sheringham—built in the 1950s and beloved by generations—now faces replacement by a new plastic shelter. We, the undersigned, strongly urge the council to reconsider this decision.
The original brick shelter is more than a structure. It is a cherished part of Sheringham’s identity. Children grew up waiting for buses here; adults now return with their own families to show them this familiar landmark. It represents history, community, and continuity.
Meanwhile, the new plastic shelter raises several concerns:
It is positioned approximately one foot away from the kerb, introducing potential safety and accessibility issues.
Its enclosed, south-facing plastic design may become dangerously hot in summer, making it uncomfortable or unusable.
It has been placed directly in front of a business driveway, adding visibility and safety concerns.
The original brick shelter shows no signs of vandalism despite being in place for over 70 years.
With so many unanswered questions, and given the cultural, historical, and sentimental value of the existing shelter, we respectfully request that the council pause its plans, review the placement and suitability of the new structure, and consider retaining the original brick shelter as an important part of Sheringham’s heritage.
Please help us preserve this unique landmark enjoyed by residents and visitors young and old.
